I don’t enjoy CDs as much, and I lack the required experience with them to make a worthwhile contribution to what has already been written. This essay is concerned with purchasing LPs, new and used, of Classical Music and will focus on record labels, pressings etc. The information, experiences and advice you will read here are generalizations only. Specific LP recommendations are detailed in an extensive list discussed below. This website also includes another huge section with the title: The Supreme Recordings. This is an extensive listing of the finest sounding records I’ve ever heard, primarily though not exclusively of classical music.

Remember the parties 30 or so years ago when you woke up in the afternoon and found about 12 of your records all over the room without bags and sleeves and then you just took any bag for the record and put it in the correct sleeve….. Well, maybe you did not have those parties, but the guy who then had the record you own today for sure did have those parties.
It is also rather difficult to confirm dates when the bags were in use. Many of the bags may have been used simultaneously and did they use all old bags before a new design was taken into use? Probably not. This bag has the text in an Arial looking font. So far I have only seen plain white bags. Some of the bags has no Patent text at all.

The changeover from non boxed to boxed version took place during the fall of That means that all LP’s manufactured before the fall of are always with non boxed labels, both mono and stereo.
The change to boxed labels was actually taking place gradually during the last months of At least Let It Bleed was out in the shops on the same time with both non boxed and boxed versions. Probably also Through The Past Darkly that was out in the shops a couple of months earlier. I have not seen any non boxed though From the beginning of , all LP’s were manufactured only with boxed labels.
So, basically one can say that a non boxed is from the 60’s and a boxed is from the 70’s. Another change was that Decca dropped the manufacturing of Mono LP’s.
